Custom Pressure Washing Trailer or Truck Skid in Illinois: How to Choose

A contractor's next pressure washing rig should be designed around the work the business actually performs—not simply the biggest GPM number or the longest list of accessories.

At Wash Works Supply in Schaumburg, Illinois, we build and support professional pressure washing and softwash equipment, including complete trailers and custom rig configurations. Here's what to decide before ordering a trailer or truck skid.

Trailer or skid: what's the difference?

A pressure washing trailer gives you a dedicated platform for tanks, pumps, hose reels and accessories. Trailers can provide room to grow, but you must consider towing capacity, tongue weight, brakes where required, trailer dimensions, safe tank mounting and how your crew parks and accesses job sites.

A truck skid puts the equipment on a truck bed or suitable platform. It may simplify maneuvering and reduce towing, but truck payload limits become especially important. Calculate the weight of water, chemicals, equipment, people and supplies rather than relying on empty-bed capacity.

Neither configuration is automatically better. The best design depends on route density, crew size, access, daily water usage, storage, the tow vehicle and the services you sell.

Decide which cleaning systems are essential

Cold-water pressure washing

A well-matched cold-water pressure washer supports surface cleaning, rinsing and many commercial exterior cleaning jobs. Flow rate matters for production, but a working system also needs suitable supply water, hose and nozzle choices.

Hot-water pressure washing

Hot water can be valuable for grease and oil applications, such as selected commercial, industrial and fleet cleaning tasks. A burner, heating system, fuel supply and additional maintenance requirements should be justified by the work you expect to perform.

Dedicated softwashing

A dedicated softwash system allows controlled application of cleaning solutions at lower pressure. The pump, blend manifold, water and chemical feeds, compatible hoses and the flush process should be accessible for daily use and maintenance.

Combination systems

Some contractors prefer a pressure washer with softwash capability, such as the Delco Dual Wash Pro. Compare the required plumbing, controls, operating modes and service implications before choosing a combination machine over separate systems.

What belongs on a well-designed pressure washing rig?

  • Water and chemical capacity: select tanks for your jobs, refill opportunities and the loaded weight you can safely carry.

  • Hoses and hose reels: allow enough reach while avoiding unnecessary restrictions, rubbing and difficult reel access.

  • Pumps, filters and unloaders: choose components appropriate for the flow and operating conditions of the system.

  • Blend and flush systems: use chemical-compatible plumbing and controls with clearly understood flow paths.

  • Fuel and electrical components: protect wiring and make batteries, fuses, grounds and service points accessible.

  • Serviceability: filters, valves, engines, pumps and hose fittings should be maintainable without dismantling the entire rig.

  • Trailer layout and ladder storage: maintain sensible weight distribution and keep hoses, ladders and accessories secure during travel.

A custom build should make the crew faster and reduce avoidable downtime, but the exact equipment and layout must still match the contractor's operating conditions.

Is 8 GPM better than 5.5 GPM or 10 GPM?

More water flow may help with faster rinsing, higher production and some larger cleaning accessories. But it also increases water demand and can change tank, plumbing and site-supply requirements. Some fleet operations prioritize a balanced flow that conserves onboard water; others need higher production.

Do not select a system by pump rating alone. Confirm the practical water supply, actual operating flow, pressure, nozzle sizing, hose routing, unloader selection and end-use.

Buy a ready-built trailer or have one custom-built?

An established platform can reduce the number of decisions and may offer a faster purchase when a suitable model is available. A custom build gives you more flexibility to specify water capacity, pump choices, chemical storage, reel layout, ladder racks and controls.

Questions to bring to a trailer-building consultation

  1. What jobs produce the most revenue today and what work do I plan to add?

  2. How many crews or operators will use the rig?

  3. Is hot water required by the work, or mainly a nice-to-have?

  4. Which systems need separate hoses or independent control?

  5. How much tank capacity is useful without exceeding vehicle ratings?

  6. Where will the rig be stored and how easily can the team maintain it?

  7. Which parts and filters should we stock to minimize downtime?

  8. How will the equipment be delivered or picked up, and who handles the startup orientation?
